Carolina Beach saw its most recent building boom in the mid 80's. At that time condominiums replaced older homes. Carolina Beach came to be 100 years before that in the late 1880's. A ferry on the Cape Fear River would bring you to a dock and then you would go by railway to the ocean side. There you would find the first boardwalk. Eventually shops and restaurants and hotels showed up. The boardwalk was reconstructed to accommodate all the people. It became a very popular place and nighttime activity. The current boardwalk was built in 2007 bringing stores and restaurants back to the area. Add a carnival and the people are back.
