Carolina Beach experienced a building boom in the mid-80's. Older homes came down and new condos went up. More people came to the island and its popularity has increased every year it seems. Carolina Beach got its start in 1887 when the first boardwalk was complete. There was no road so people came by ferry on the Cape Fear River. Once docked they took the railway to the ocean front. The second beach in "Pleasure Island" is Kure Beach. Its recent building boom was in the 2000's. Old homes were torn down and new ones came up. It is interesting but condos are not part of the landscape.

The Final beach in Pleasure Island is Fort Fisher. It is named after the Civil War Fort that was used to protect the Wilmington Port. The North Carolina Aquarium is also there.
