Fort Fisher has a Civil War Fort that was used to protect the Cape Fear River. There is also the North Carolina Aquarium located here. There is another beach(4.92 miles away) that allows four wheel drive access that is not as populated as Freeman Park. You can also catch the ferry there and take a trip to historic Southport.
